About the Author

It’s no surprise that Julie Garwood became a writer. Growing up in a large family of Irish heritage, she took to storytelling naturally. “The Irish relish getting all the details of every situation,” she explains. “Add in the fact that I was the sixth of seven children. Early in life, I learned that self-expression had to be forceful, imaginative, and quick.”

Creating stories was always a passion for Julie, but she didn’t focus on making it a career until the youngest of her three children entered school. After the publication of two young adult books, she turned her interests to historical fiction. Whether the setting is medieval Scotland, Regency England, frontier Montana, or modern-day Louisiana, her themes are consistent: family, loyalty, and honour. Readers claim that it’s the humour as well as the poignancy of her novels that keep them coming back for more. Julie described her goals this way: “I want my readers to laugh and cry and fall in love. Basically, I want them to escape into another world for a little while and afterwards to feel as though they’ve been on a great adventure.”

Julie lives in Leawood, Kansas, and is currently working on her next novel.

The Wedding by Julie Garwood

Romance sections at popular bookstores are smaller than Cinderella’s foot! I found this gem on the dusty shelf of a rent-a-book place after a long day of searching.

Let me start off by saying that reading this book was like preparing tea: an infusion, starting on a low flame at first, taking its time to boil. The words were like tea powder: black dots leisurely releasing their colour and taste to coat the palate of the drinker, leaving behind a trail of freshness. Its singular goal? To reach your happy place.

This ’96 book took its own time to build up but bolted soon into a series of roller-coaster events. With the backdrop of dreamy Highlands, the tale of Brenna Haynesworth and Connor MacAlister commences in the early 1100s.

The story of innocent, God-fearing bride Brenna may have hinted at a clichéd plotline at first. But fortunately, the predictable takes a turnabout for good. Brenna’s hidden fiery side and cleverness beat any of the all-smiles, shy female protagonists that usually dominate contemporary love stories. This is probably why Connor, a ruthless and brutal heathen (as first perceived by his “own sweet Brenna”) falls head over heels for the young English beauty.
From facing gory pasts, overcoming betrayal from loved ones and numerous odd misunderstandings, to finally professing their love for one another, this book is sure to leave you craving for a MacAlister plaid-wearing Highlander and a hot cup of tea.

Julie Garwood’s keen eye for detail and deep understanding of her own creation—characters and their characteristics—make her one of the most celebrated romance writers. The author sticks to the essence of the era in both language and layers of the story. If you’re 18+ with a penchant for rustic romances, you can pick any of Garwood’s works in a heartbeat. As a diligent fan and an avid reader of this genre, I sure look forward to reading more from her.

Favourite quote: Connor’s response when he finds Brenna effortlessly riding his extremely volatile stallion;

“It’s going to take me a week to get over seeing my wife on the black (his way of calling the horse). Every time I think about it, I shake like an old man. I keep picturing her flying across the meadow . . .

Recommended Age Group: If you’re 18+ with a penchant for rustic romances, you can pick any of Garwood’s works in a heartbeat.
