PLOT: Each Novella chronicles five missions undertaken by Celaena Sardothien in a bid to attain true freedom. She is loyal to her master Arobynn Hamel and trusts no one except probably Sam Cortland who is also her number one rival. But as she embarks on her missions, she changes, and her priorities change. Does she truly attain her freedom, this is what the Novellas are all about.
CHARACTERS: Celaena as the assassin with a cold heart, is wonderful. The way she grows as she processes new information and deals with new situations is so easily discernible. Even her regular interactions change. Sam Cortland, well I loved him from the moment he arrived, and I loved him even more when he said “The only secret I’ve borne my entire life is that I Love You.” This is a moment in the book that will make you go “Awww” and truly shows how far the characters have come in their journey through the book. Aryobnn Hamel is someone you would love to hate, just like his presence makes you want to kill him, but you wonder whether you would be able to kill the king of Assassins. All the characters are awesome and any book written with such characters is bound to be a winner.
WHAT I LIKED: One very important part of the book is this amazing fantasy world created by the author. The landscape is an equally important part of the story, it is described very vividly and the scene draws images in your mind. This is one of my favourite parts of the book. The stories lead up beautifully to the heartbreaking end. Fast-paced action and Romance and the balance between the two is well maintained.
WHAT I DID NOT LIKE: Nothing to like really, the language is fluid, the narration flows perfectly, the characters are loveable or hateable and the love blossoms.
FINAL VERDICT: A perfect YA fantasy with a bit of romance and a lot of thrill thrown in. Anybody that reads fantasy will enjoy this book.
