The Mahabharata Quest: The Alexander Secret

Christopher C Doyle brings together History, Mythology and Science in an interesting and compelling story, of The Mahabharata Quest: The Alexander Secret. The title piqued my curiosity, “What could Mahabharata, and Alexander ever have in common, Right?” Incidentally, this is again the first book by the author, I am reading. (Makes me think I should have done one of those challenges, considering the number of new authors I have read this year).

PLOT: An ancient tomb is discovered in Greece, and a hidden lab in New Delhi, both events seemingly unconnected at first. But as Vijay Singh and the task force start to delve deeper, they find more to both mysteries. The tomb, reveals some ancient truths and secrets that, the powerful order wants to guard. The Tomb also reveals truths about Alexander the Great, and his quest to conquer the world. At the same time, it also reveals, threatening plans by a powerful enemy, that no one knew existed. Ancient texts are unlocked and age-old secrets are revealed, all while Vijay and the others have to race against time. The pace of the Story and the plot twists make it a fun read.

CHARACTERS: Vijay, Colin, Radha and Imran share an excellent rapport, as they have gone through this before. They know who does what and how each of them will react in a given situation. They are the perfect team, and Alice adds to the equation. The author has taken the time to establish each character and they hold their own and play their part well. The antagonists, work for and represent the ideologies of the order. The whole order hasn’t been revealed yet and has been kept for the next book.

WHAT I LIKED: The pace and narration of the book are very fast-paced. It has been written by combining a lot of scientific and historical details, but the manner in which it has been presented makes the book more interesting. The reader is allowed to make opinions and come to conclusions on his own, which is a big plus for me. You are not told everything and that makes the read more interesting. A good cover, tells you a lot about the book yet does not reveal everything, just like the story which tells you a lot without revealing all its secrets.

WHAT I DID NOT LIKE: In certain places the pace of the book falters, it becomes too fast in a few places and too slow in others. With the amount of information put in the book, it is really difficult to achieve the right balance. While the author has done a great job throughout the book he falters in a few places.

FINAL VERDICT: The book really ties up Science, Mythology and  History very well. Every instance, every theory, is so believable that sometimes, it becomes very difficult to separate fiction from reality and that is the USP of the book. It is an engaging and interesting read and I am eagerly waiting for the next in the series.
